I started drawing walruses in various states of reclining and lounging after a trip I took to the Walrus Islands State Game Sanctuary on Round Island, off the coast of Togiak, Alaska. The way the animals in those drawings seem to float on the paper removed from their landscape really excited me. These images took on a new perspective after seeing the footage of walruses falling to their deaths off of cliffs in the Our Planet documentary. Translating these drawings onto clay allowed me to be more playful with them, find humor in their character, and allow the ceramic materials to give them more of a sense of space.

In honor of these animals, I will be donating 10% of all sales to the Alaska Sea Life Center, who recently cared for an orphaned baby walrus calf in rehabilitation, among other Alaskan marine mammals! Thank you for supporting my art!
